Climate determines conditioning frequency - dry environments require treatment every 2-3 weeks, while humid areas need it monthly. Leather dries out faster when exposed to sweat, sun, and temperature swings. Check for stiffness or cracking between rides to catch drying before damage occurs.

Riding boots typically measure 12-13 inches to prevent stirrup chafing and provide leg contact with the horse. Ranch work boots run 10-11 inches for easier walking and flexibility during ground tasks. Taller shafts offer more protection but reduce ankle mobility off the horse.

It should hang loose enough to fit a fist underneath but tight enough to engage when the front cinch pulls forward. Trail riding rarely requires one unless you're in mountainous country.

A properly fitted saddle sits level, clears the withers by three fingers' width, and allows two fingers between the gullet and spine along its length. The bars should contact the horse's back evenly without rocking or bridging. Poor fit causes sore backs, behavior problems, and uneven muscle development.
